| What is a Genetic Medicine Clinic and who can benefit? |
| |

A genetic medicine consultation is a conversation with a person clinically trained in genetics with the objective of assessing the patient’s risk of developing a hereditary disease. |
| |
| What happens after the Genetic Medicine Clinic? |
| |
After the first consultation a Clinical and Scientific Advisory Board help to make recommendations about any genetic tests or screening programmes the patient could benefit from. The patient will be sent a follow-up letter giving all the information about the recommendations that they will need to make a personal choice about how they wish to proceed. Opaldia will only recommend genetic testing or screening to a patients who could significantly benefit. The purpose of the first consultation is to inform the patient about what options are available to them and there is no obligation for the patient to take further action on these recommendations. |

| What is a Genetic Test? |
| |
Genetic testing usually involves examining a person's DNA - taken from cells in a sample of blood or, from other body fluids or tissues - for some anomaly that flags a disease or disorder. The DNA change can be relatively large: a missing or added piece of a chromosome - even an entire chromosome - that is visible under a microscope, or it can be extremely small, as little as one extra, missing, or altered chemical base. Genes can be overexpressed (too many copies), inactivated, or lost altogether. Sometimes, pieces of chromosomes become switched, or transposed, so that a gene ends up in a location where it is permanently and inappropriately turned on or off.
Since genetic testing may open up ethical or psychological problems, genetic testing is accompanied by genetic counseling.
